Verified brief
The story in 60 seconds
Open enrollment for 2027 ACA Marketplace coverage began November 1, 2026. HealthCare.gov lists January 15, 2027 as the final enrollment day, with December 15, 2026 the deadline for January 1 coverage and a first premium required. State-run exchanges can differ: New York’s published window ends January 31.

The complete story
The annual sign-up period for 2027 individual Marketplace health insurance is underway. HealthCare.gov’s live dates guide says people can enroll in, renew or change Marketplace plans from November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027.
For HealthCare.gov coverage beginning January 1, the published plan-selection deadline is December 15. The guide also requires payment of the first premium. Enrollments or plan changes from December 16 through January 15 have a February 1 coverage start, again subject to first-premium payment. The enrollment deadline and the start of insurance are different milestones.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ October 20 consumer notice confirms those dates and warns that some state-run marketplaces use different enrollment periods. New York’s Health Department, for example, announced a November 1–January 31 window for 2027 Qualified Health Plans, while encouraging enrollment by December 15 for a January 1 start.
The opening comes amid changes in prices and insurer participation. The Associated Press reported on November 1 that people entering this enrollment period face higher premiums and fewer coverage options. New York’s official notice provides a concrete state example: it lists 11 Qualified Health Plan insurers for 2027, down from 12, and says Oscar Health’s departure affects 4,800 consumers who need to select a new plan. That state-specific account is not a count of national insurer departures.

Our take
Analysis
What the evidence and search signal suggest
Our assessment: three facts are easily conflated in enrollment coverage—the last day to choose a plan, the date coverage can begin, and the price of a particular policy. The official calendar answers the first two for HealthCare.gov. It does not answer the third or determine an individual’s eligibility. New York’s longer window illustrates why a federal deadline should not be presented as universal.

Meaning
Why this matters
A final enrollment date does not mean coverage begins immediately. On the federal platform, someone enrolling after December 15 falls into the published February-start timetable rather than the January-start timetable. State exchange calendars need to be read separately.
Insurer participation and available plans also vary by location. A national headline about costs or choices cannot determine a particular person’s premium, eligibility, provider network or coverage. Those details come from the relevant marketplace and the plan’s documents.
Background
How we got here
The Affordable Care Act established the Marketplace as a way to compare and enroll in health plans, the NAIC explains. Open enrollment is its annual application and renewal window. It is not a single calendar for every kind of insurance: employer, private and student plans set their own enrollment periods.
HealthCare.gov says Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program accept applications throughout the year. Outside Marketplace open enrollment, a qualifying Special Enrollment Period can also permit enrollment. These are separate routes, with eligibility determined by the relevant program.
Outlook
What is likely to happen next
The current calendar remains the reference point for this briefing. We will update the same page if an official exchange changes a deadline or announces a substantive coverage update. HealthCare.gov links to plan information and local enrollment assistance; the NAIC also directs consumers with questions to their state insurance department.

Commentary
What we think
SearchTrends Daily opinion: enrollment reporting is most useful when it identifies the applicable exchange and coverage year beside each deadline. Clear dates and direct official links are more informative than a headline suggesting every household faces the same change.
