The complete story
Update — October 17, 2026: Game 1 is complete. Golden State won 68–64, replacing this page's morning pre-game status. The official final scoreboard, league live blog and CBS Sports' completed-game report agree on the result. The practical schedule guide below retains the October 13 changes to Atlanta's games.
The opening game changed direction repeatedly. Atlanta led 22–14 after the first quarter. Golden State's 28–17 second quarter put the Valkyries ahead 42–39 at halftime, before the Dream took the third quarter 17–9 to lead 56–51. Golden State then won the final period 17–8, turning a five-point deficit into a four-point victory. Those quarter scores come from the official game page's linescore, not an inference from a preview.
Williams finished with a game-high 26 points. The official player box score lists Allisha Gray with 19 for Atlanta, Angel Reese with 14 and Rhyne Howard with 12. Golden State's first Finals appearance has therefore produced its first Finals game win, but four victories are required to win this series.
The next meeting is Game 2 at Chase Center on Monday, October 19, at 8pm Eastern / 5pm Pacific. The league lists USA Network, CNBC and Peacock for US coverage. These are US listings, not confirmation of Canadian broadcast rights or access through a Canadian subscription.
The remaining schedule is as follows, with all times in Eastern and later games conditional where stated:
Game 2 — Monday, October 19, 8pm, Chase Center.
Game 3 — Wednesday, October 21, 8pm, State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
Game 4 — Saturday, October 24, 1pm, State Farm Arena.
Game 5, if needed — Monday, October 26, 8pm, Chase Center.
Game 6, if needed — Thursday, October 29, 8pm, Atlanta; venue still to be determined in the league's published schedule.
Game 7, if needed — Saturday, October 31, 8pm, Chase Center.
The league lists USA Network, CNBC and Peacock for Games 2, 3 and any Games 5–7. Game 4 is listed for NBC and Peacock. Check the current league and local-provider listings before travelling or purchasing access.
The Atlanta revision predates Game 1. The WNBA's October 13 notice moved Game 3 from Thursday, October 22 to Wednesday, October 21. It also moved Game 4's tip-off from 3:30pm to 1pm on October 24. The later Finals preview and Golden State's team schedule agree. The September postseason FAQ still carries the older grid, so its Atlanta date and time should not override that specific later notice.

Our take
Analysis
What the evidence and search signal suggest
Our reading is that the closing quarter matters more than a simple claim that the higher seed justified its ranking. Golden State entered the final ten minutes five points behind and finished four ahead. The 17–8 period demonstrates the size of that reversal; it does not, by itself, isolate the quality of every shot, the cause of every miss or an advantage that must repeat.
The narrow margin also limits what can reasonably be projected. One additional productive possession for either side could have changed the closing pressure. We should assess whether Atlanta can sustain its offense late and whether Golden State can maintain its execution, not assume that one low-scoring finish establishes the pattern for the whole series.
Williams' 26 points provide a concrete individual contribution. Turning that into a prediction about the next game would require more evidence about how both teams adjust. Home court remains the venue assignment, not a substitute for that analysis.

Meaning
Why this matters
The reader's first question now has a result: Golden State won Game 1 and leads 1–0. That changes the competitive position, but it does not settle a best-of-seven series. The Valkyries still need three more victories for a title; Atlanta needs four.
The viewing question remains separate. Using the old grid could leave a reader a day late for Game 3 or arriving after Game 4 has begun. Axios independently reported the revised Atlanta arrangements. State Farm Arena is confirmed for Games 3 and 4, but that announcement does not also confirm the venue for a possible Game 6.
A result, a schedule and a forecast answer different questions. Keeping them separate prevents a completed opening game from being mistaken for a championship outcome or a guarantee about later fixtures.
Background
How we got here
Both finalists are seeking a first WNBA championship. Golden State reached the Finals in its second season, while Atlanta returned to the championship series for the first time since 2013. The Valkyries finished the regular season 32–12 and the Dream 30–14. Both swept their semifinal opponents: Golden State eliminated Las Vegas and Atlanta beat New York.
Golden State won all three regular-season meetings with Atlanta, the last on July 4. Those earlier games are background rather than additional Finals victories. The championship series began at 0–0; its current score is 1–0.
The Finals use a 2–2–1–1–1 venue sequence. Golden State has the first two home games and would host Games 5 and 7 if required. The seven dates describe the maximum series, not seven guaranteed games.
Outlook
What is likely to happen next
Game 2 is scheduled for Monday, October 19, at 8pm Eastern / 5pm Pacific at Chase Center. Recheck the league's current fixture listing and the relevant local broadcaster before making plans. Game 3 follows on Wednesday, October 21, in Atlanta.
We would revise the competitive analysis if completed Game 2 evidence changes the late-game pattern, rather than treating a single opening result as decisive. An official schedule change, confirmed Game 6 venue or later clinching result would also trigger an update. Games 5–7 remain conditional; no champion, guaranteed series length or individual health forecast is asserted here.
A conditional editorial assessment based on the evidence available at the review date, not a guaranteed outcome.

Updates to this story
Game 1 completed: Golden State leads 1–0; revised schedule retained
Updated 17 October 2026 after completed play: the official game scoreboard/box score, league live blog and CBS Sports final report agree that Golden State beat Atlanta 68–64. Williams scored 26. The current headline, dek, summary and report replace the morning preview with the result; analysis, opinion and outlook now assess a 1–0 series rather than a game that has not begun. The original publication timestamp, stable URL, author, market codes and relevant illustration are retained. History preserved: the earlier title was 'WNBA Finals start October 17: Valkyries–Dream times and revised schedule'. Its summary explicitly said, 'This is a pre-game explainer, not a result: the best-of-seven series has not begun at our morning review.' Its outlook began, 'Game 1 is scheduled for later on October 17,' and said no winner, series lead or Game 1 score was being reported. Those were morning status statements, now superseded by completed play. The earlier analysis said the first completed game would supply new evidence and would not settle the race to four victories; the revised analysis retains that uncertainty with the verified result. Schedule review: Game 2 remains October 19 at 8pm Eastern / 5pm Pacific at Chase Center. The October 13 Atlanta revision still governs: Game 3 October 21, Game 4 October 24 at 1pm Eastern, both State Farm Arena. Games 5–7 remain conditional and the published Game 6 venue remains TBD. Verification limits: a WNBA homepage promotion displayed 86–84 during this review, conflicting with the completed-game record and live blog. That graphic was not used as the score authority. Four result/linescore citations were added while the original five schedule/context sources were retained. No claim of a championship winner, Canadian broadcast rights or new injury prognosis is made.
Commentary
What we think
SearchTrends Daily opinion: report the win clearly, but leave the championship argument open. Golden State earned a 1–0 lead; it did not win a title on Saturday. A useful guide should make the next game's time and the changed Atlanta dates as easy to find as the score.
The first game strengthens the case for watching the adjustments rather than repeating a pre-series certainty. The competitive story is still being made, and the schedule should not be treated as a prediction of how many games it will take.
